Candidate Information

Michael Morgan

As a first year graduate student my energy level and ambition to be engaged in impactful discussion is at an all time high. The focus of my master’s research project is cannabis seed development, which takes advantage of a novel market sector and serves to make an impact on nutrition and food security. Our society is rapidly advancing and I challenge myself to stay up to date with a variety of topics such as technology, economics, finance, as well as food and water security. Recently I attended the CSE Blockchain seminar hosted at the Okanagan Centre for Innovation, the Cannabis & Hemp Conference in Vancouver, and the Molecular Biology Techniques workshop at UBC Vancouver. I maintain a balanced lifestyle by participating in snowboarding, hiking, supporting local farmer’s markets, and staying in touch with family and friends back home in Saskatchewan. Currently I am a member of the Biology Graduate Students Society (BGSS), and Canadian Students for Sensible Drug Policy (CSSDP). Previously I was elected salutatorian for my graduating class, highlighting my ability to represent a group of people such as the graduate students of UBC Okanagan. It would be an honour to serve as the Vice President of Research and Innovation.

Corrina Thomsen

I am currently a Master’s student in Biology at the UBC Okanagan Campus, and will be starting my PhD in September in the same. I was inspired by the potential to apply the ecology of mycorrhizal fungi to improve agricultural sustainability, and was drawn to UBCO’s extensive collaboration with local industries and AgriFood Canada, which has produced exciting and useful research. I would love to see an Assoc. VP Research and Innovation who balances foundational and applied research, and fosters collaboration between campuses. Qualities I would look for in a suitable candidate would be a high-quality (not necessarily high-quantity) publication record, whose research program is broad in scope with proven collaborations, and is energized and motivated by the university setting. If elected, this would be my third Committee seat, as I have served on the Graduate Student Advisory Committee and the CoGS Program and Curriculum Committee.
