Candidate Information
Maria Cleveland
I am currently a PhD candidate in the Department of Chemistry at the Vancouver UBC campus. I have been involved in many non-academic activities on campus over the past three years since joining the graduate program. I am currently president of the Chemistry Graduate Student Society (CGSS) through which I have been interacted with the Head of our Department and discussed many way of improving the of graduate student life in Vancouver.
Through the CGSS, I have also given feedback after meeting candidates for the recent search of a new faculty for the Department of Chemistry and for the search for a new Dean of Science. I have enjoyed being involved in both processes and I think I would be able to give valuable feedback and be an asset for the Advisory Committee in selecting a new Associate Vice-President, Research and Innovation.

I am pleased to offer my service as a graduate student to serve on the President’s Advisory Committee for the search of an Associate Vice-President, Research and Innovation. Having lived and worked in several countries in Asia, Europe, and North America, I bring to the table a decade-long experience as a research student, educator, and a global citizen. In particular, I have served for three years on the editorial advisory board of a top-tier research publication by Wiley-Blackwell. I have also been a proposal reviewer, presenter, and moderator at over twenty prestigious research-oriented conferences in Canada and abroad. Moreover, I have worked as a professional development consultant in higher education in Asia and Eastern Europe. Therefore, with my unique experience, I hope to best represent UBC graduate students on this committee.
I am currently serving as a subject expert with the BC Ministry of Advanced Education’s accreditation branch for private post-secondary institutions, and I am teaching on the UBC academic exchange program.
I have also taken many professional leadership roles as a committee member, elected chair, and elected graduate student leader. For instance, I have served on the President’s Advisory Committee (Feb-May 2017), and I am currently a peer reviewer of teaching at the CTLT. This exposure has provided me with a tremendous opportunity to connect with students from across departments, understand the university community, and actively support various initiatives.
Thank you for consideration.

My name is Daniel He and I am excited to be considered for the graduate student representative on the search committee for the new Associate Vice-President of Research and Innovation at UBC. I currently a PhD student studying interstitial lung diseases with Dr. Scott Tebbutt and Dr. Christopher Ryerson at St. Paul’s Hospital, and I have previously completed a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Sciences and a Master of Science at UBC as well. Some might say that’s a long time to spend at one place, and they would be correct – but I love it here and would be truly be honoured to play a role in shaping its future. UBC is a top research university in the world, and I have experienced that first hand through my work with UBC’s very own leaders in health research. The current search focuses on someone with experience in fostering innovation through entrepreneurship and commercialization to maximize social and economic impact. That is incredibly important for UBC as it continues to develop as a global leader in research and innovation, and I hope to find a candidate who has both community and global outreach skills that can help us. More importantly, I look forward to finding someone who can create industry partnerships that UBC students can benefit from, whether it be summer internships or postgraduate employment. If you have any questions, send me a message on my new twitter at @thedanhe and let me know what you think!

I am a research-based Master's student in Forestry. I have been a UBC student for 6 years, and have conducted research since my third year of undergrad. Learning that this new position will focus on innovation immediately captured my attention as it resonated with my own work. It also provides a unique opportunity to help find a leader who will support much-needed research with the greatest potential for broad social and economic impact.
My research provides governance-related insights for anticipating and addressing complex trade-offs between nature conservation and development. I hope to develop applied insights for informing practice in a rapidly changing world. As an academic-in-training, conducting research with the potential to influence policy is not feasible without proper institutional support and intentional leadership.
I can bring a well-developed diversity and inclusion lens to the committee. I am the co-founder of a group of students and faculty interested in learning about, and furthering diversity in Forestry. We have hosted workshops addressing unconscious biases, improving intercultural competencies, and speaking up in the face of injustice. I have also participated in three search committees in Forestry representing undergraduates to hire an Instructor, and two Professors.
I believe my experience conducting applied, innovative research gives me a sound understanding of the need to invest in institutional leadership, and my ongoing devotion to service and inclusion in Forestry shows a high degree of engagement that will serve me well as part of this committee.
Thank you in advance for your consideration.
