Candidate Information

Jannik Eikenaar, Instructor, Engineering

As recent discussions in Senate have shown, the selection of the next Okanagan Provost is a crucial decision for both the success of the campus and the dynamics of the UBC system. We need someone who can provide clear, effective academic leadership, recognize how the unique history of this campus informs our current institutional model, and advocate for the Okanagan within the system model. The next Provost must, too, be someone who is committed to upholding principles of honest, ethical, and responsible engagement in the many communities within which UBC Okanagan is a member, as well as capable of guiding the university through the challenging processes of improving diversity and inclusivity.

As a Joint Faculties Representative on Senate, and an active member of several Senate committees, I take seriously my responsibility in serving this campus. I have taught in several academic units here, and I think my perspective on the past, present, and future of the Okanagan campus is largely defined by the different lenses through which those units view the larger whole. I would be honoured to serve as a member of this advisory committee

Deanna Gibson, Associate Professor, Biology

I am an Associate Professor in the Biology Department of the Barber School of Arts & Sciences, where I teach undergraduate courses in immunology and microbiology, and where I head a laboratory that studies the impact of microbes and diet on gut health.  I have previously served on hiring committees for the Head of the Biology Department, and for the Associate Dean of Research for the Barber School.   The selection committee for the UBCO Provost has a critical role in shaping the future of our campus.  The next Provost must have vision, proven academic leadership skills, and an ability to make effective use of resources at UBCO. Administrative positions are incredibly important to all faculty, students and staff, and to our strategic goals.  I will use my energy to provide a thorough, fair and unbiased review of the candidates, to help the committee find the best leader for our campus.

Gordon Lovegrove, Associate Professor, Engineering

It would be an honor to serve on this Presidential Advisory Committee for the Selection of UBCO’s next Provost and Vice-Principal, Academic.  We must all do our part to engage in and to support our Okanagan campus community, and if elected to this position, I will do my best to help find the most excellent candidate so that UBCO continues to thrive! I have most recently served in a similar capacity on the PAC for Selection of UBC’s VP of Human Resources.  I have previously served on the UBCO Senate, and various curriculum committees.

In terms of background, I’m an Associate Professor of Sustainable Communities and founding faculty member of UBCO’s School of Engineering.  I chair the Canadian Society of Civil Engineering Committee on Sustainability, and am a co-author of several books on sustainability, including most recently the American Society of Civil Engineering’s book “Engineering Sustainable Communities”.  Each June, I take 20 UBC students and professionals to study the planning and design of New Towns in Holland, one of the worlds’ wealthiest, healthiest and most sustainability-oriented countries.  Learning by doing - by living and experiencing -  is paramount to overcoming mental barriers and imparting a vision of what is possible when a community comes together and takes ownership of its future.

Barbara Rutherford,  Associate Professor, Psychology

I have been a long-time member of the Psychology Department, and have served in the roles of Head of Psychology and Computer Science, Associate Dean Faculty and Academic Planning, and Acting Dean of the IKBSAS.  As a Faculty member and administrator, I have gained direct experience in working with three Provosts.  I have learned that forward progression of the academic mission of the University is inspired and accomplished when the Provost’s leadership style is founded on genuine and informed respect for all areas of expertise represented by faculty; inclusive decision-making supported by fair, transparent processes; hard work to advance the academic mission as a collective; and evolving the vision for our campus with fulsome understanding of the breadth of our University’s culture and aspirations.  Accordingly, the core of my contributions to the search committee will be to advocate strongly for these characteristics in our new Provost.

Ian Walker, Professor, Biology

Ian Walker has served as a faculty member on the Okanagan campus for over 25 years, currently having appointments in both Biology, and Earth, Environmental and Geographic Sciences.  When UBC Okanagan was founded he was a member of the interim academic governing body, predecessor to the UBC Okanagan Senate. He has previously represented UBC Okanagan on UBC’s Senior Appointments Committee, and on the UBC-wide committee tasked internally with adjudicating CFI proposals. He has held adjunct appointments at Simon Fraser University and Université Laval, and visiting professorships at University of Bern, University of Concepcion, and Stockholm University. Ian is principally a student of natural history with research interests pertaining to climate change, environmental impacts, and endangered mussels. He has served on NSERC’s Environmental Earth Sciences Grant Selection Committee. Among his principal concerns is the sustainable development of the UBC Okanagan campus, including the protection of natural features which enhance campus life in terms of physical and mental health, and serve as an educational resource for our students.  Ian prides himself on an open mind; thus, he is eager to listen, but he is also vocal in protecting the interests of students, faculty and the environment.
