Candidate Information

Shola Fashanu

As someone who is passionate about involvement in student clubs and student affairs, I am excited about the opportunity to run for the UBCO student representative position on the Board of Governors. I am currently in my second-year of studying mechanical engineering but in my first year at UBCO I discovered the amazing opportunities available through student run organizations and have never looked back. I have held countless positions throughout my student leadership involvement such as; Vice President of Women in Engineering, Junior Fellow of Engineers Without Borders, Second Year Representative of the Engineering Society and as a Lead Coordinator for UBCO EngiQueers. In the future I would like to expand my involvement with a wider variety of organizations and connect with and be a voice for as many UBCO students as possible.

I am running for this position as I feel there are issues that exist at our school pertaining to general transparency between the university and students; tuition increases, allocation of space, particularly referring to club and student study space, as well as our sexual assault policy. I would address these pressing issues by lobbying for changes within the Board’s committees and formally addressing student concerns. Furthermore, I would promote BoG-student communication by using social media as a platform to publish and share relevant content directly to the online student community. More than just being a representative of the students, my goal in this position is to be able to effect change in a meaningful way.
