Candidate Information

Amal Alhuwayshil

My name is Amal Alhuwayshil, and I am honored to be serving as the first female President of the UBC Students' Union Okanagan (UBCSUO). I’m a fifth yearManagement student, a TEDx speaker, a yoga instructor and a woman born and raised in Saudi Arabia. I enjoy reading, dancing, and playing softball. I am driven by making
a difference, and always eager to find opportunities to passionately advocate for the equity and empowerment of all people. Although I served as Vice President External Affairs for the UBCSUO last year, I have been involved in many facets of this dear and close-to-my-heart UBCO campus. I was a Resident Advisor, a club executive, Campus Relation Manager with the Management Students Association, a speaker at two of our Student Leadership Conference and many other. I am also the Campaigns Coordinator of the BC Federation of Students (BCFS), as elected by thirteen Post-Secondary Institutions across BC. The Senate is a venue that I have been very curious about, but yet intimidated by. However, through my involvement in many of the university committees, I got the opportunity to set and work with some of the representatives from Senate, and learned more about the impact that changing policies can have on our campus.

My journey is one of many people just like me, the very definition of the Canadian experience, having migrated from West Africa at the age of 4 and fully engaging myself in an enriched and diverse melting pot of cultures. My advocacy for youth issues began when I was invited to sit on a Panel with Canada’s newly minted Children’s Minister to discuss the major issues facing Youth in Canada, at the Economic Club of Calgary. This lead to me being invited on CBC as Calgary’s Youth ambassador for Canada’s First Children’s Charter helping to recognize the rights of Children across the nation. I was flown out to Ottawa to draft the first version of the Charter, being honoured with the privilege of meeting Sophie Grégoire Trudeau to discuss the importance of the Charter. The trip ended with me being invited to give a press conference at Parliament along with the lead of Children’s First Canada Sara Austin and two other youth representatives discussing the finalization of the Charter and its intended goals. Since my youth I have always been active in representing my peers, standing as an ambassador and giving my voice for the voiceless. I hope to embody that same spirit in a new chapter of my life, as I enter the world, I take with me the lessons that have shaped my worldview, continuing to serve in principle and with virtue and I support my nomination for Student Representative on the Okanagan Senate.

The senate holds its place as the academic governing body of UBC Okanagan, as such the developments made here will directly affect your experience at UBC. From course and curriculum changes to study spaces and teaching resources to research opportunities and student awards… the senate is involved in all aspects of how the university functions.

As a former senator at large I have some experience serving on the senate and in my time have been able to represent the voice of students in both the monthly senate general meetings and also within a variety of committees such as the academic building and resources, curriculum and appeals of standing and discipline. I hope to continue this in the upcoming academic year and therefore ask for your vote of confidence as I stand for a position as senator at large one more time.

UBC Okanagan’s rapidly growing community is a quintessential model of transforming education and a maturing institution. Being a member of this campus for the past three, crucial years of growth has inspired me to develop myself as an intellect and leave this institution with the confidence of entering the world and contributing to society to the best of my ability. A changing society will require a change in our education system and novel methods of developing its students into passionate intellectuals. I hope to see UBC be a pioneer of future education, encouraging its students to not fulfill roles in the workforce but to continuously measure progress in achievements of their own personal goals. In my tenure as Student At-Large, I plan to work with my colleagues and team members to maintain UBC’s code of conduct, promote an effective standard of academia, and be an active member within the campus community. As a student member of the UBC Okanagan Senate, I hope to contribute to UBC’s strive for inclusion, personal growth, and academic excellence to the best of my ability, keeping the university’s and students’ interest at the centre of every decision.

Simon Marriott

As I begin my fourth year of study here at UBC Okanagan, I want to use the knowledge I’ve gained in my time here to benefit current and future students as a member of the Okanagan Senate. In the past 3 years as a member, and executive of UBCO Motorsports, supervising in the new Makerspace and being generally involved with events on campus, I have had the opportunity to interact with variety of students at different stages of their degrees in all faculties.

Through these interactions, I have learned what people appreciate about their academic experience, along with many frustrations. I plan to use these interactions to guide my decisions as a member of the Senate. I believe that I will be able to pull from these interactions with members of all faculties to make meaningful decisions that will benefit the current and future student population.

Thank you for your consideration.

David E. Phypers

My name is David Ethan Phypers. From a family of five, born and raised in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, I came to The University of British Columbia Okanagan Campus in 2016 to study Applied Science, specializing in civil engineering. Now in my third year, I hold an 85% overall grade average.

I am highly motivated to improve communities, which comes from my involvement, since I was young, in non-profit organizations, such as my local Meals On Wheels program, Samaritan’s Purse: Operation Christmas Child, Relay For Life, Run For The Cure, and the Yellowknife Brain Tumor Walk. In grade 12, I also joined my Student Council, acting as the Student Council Treasurer, with duties such as budgeting resources, proposing events, fundraisers, and theme days, along with assisting in the planning and organization of events.

I realized, by becoming the Student Representative At-Large to the Senate, that I would be able to make a positive and long-lasting impact on the campus and student body. Having two years of experience, on this campus, I understand the challenges that students face, such as balancing a heavy course load, while maintaining physical and mental health, and I will bring this knowledge to the Okanagan Senate in all discussions and important decisions which impact the student body.

I believe that UBC Okanagan is one of the best campuses in Canada, and I hope to be a major contributor to elevating this status and improving student life.

Andrew Pipke

My name is Andrew Pipke and I am seeking the nomination for Senator at Large on the UBC Okanagan Senate. I am a fifth-year civil engineering student with a passion for getting involved on campus and assisting the growth of UBC Okanagan. Throughout my time at UBC I have been a second-year representative of the Engineering Society, where I was elected by my peers to represent student voices within the faculty, an executive with Engineers Without Borders, where I led a fundraiser that raised over $5,500 to send a fellow student to Africa to fight systemic poverty, a representative on the Professional Activities Fund, where I voted on capital allocation to clubs within Engineering, and a Create student orientation leader. Outside of school, I have been a member of the Kelowna Business Development Network, where I spoke to a number of local entrepreneurs about how to grow business and improve resource and capital allocation, and a member of a provincial political party, where I have attended the provincial conference and voted on policy for the upcoming election. I want to run for senate to represent all students regardless of their year, faculty, or values. I am passionate about topics such as academic support, faculty growth opportunities, school affordability, smart university growth, and mental health initiatives. If I am elected to the senate, I will stay for the entire term to represent the voices of my peers and continue to grow the world-renowned reputation of UBC.
