In light of the possibility of restructuring at UBCO, as well as projected growth in the longer term, the choice of the next DVC will be an important one. Having been a faculty member at UBCO from inception, and briefly during the transition from the predecessor OUC, I am keenly aware of the impact excellent personnel has at all levels of the university. I have overseen or served on search committees (about ten including faculty and staff) up to the level of Associate Dean. Several of these searches occurred when I was Head of Chemistry and Earth & Environmental Sciences (2005–8) and I have occasionally served on hiring committees since then. This has given me the opportunity to see how search committee recommendations play out over the long run. One of the factors the DVC has to work with is the two-campus structure and how it functions. Of course, the hiring committee must also have an understanding of this area as well. I have a good understanding of UBCO, but I am also familiar with the Vancouver campus. This started with a sabbatical leave from Concordia University, when I spent a year (2002-3) on the Vancouver campus as an adjunct Associate Professor in the Chemistry Department and as a Fellow of Green College. This exposure to UBC s a whole has continued through my service on inter-campus student awards (NSERC) and research funding (CFI) adjudication panels.
