Positions and Candidate Information

President (1 Position)

Bayan Al Nahhas

Hi! My name is Bayan Al Nahhas. I am a current PhD student in Electrical Engineering department at UBC-Okanagan. I moved to Canada three years ago to pursue my graduate studies at UBCO, where I earned a MASc degree in Electrical Engineering year 2020 and I’m now entering my second year PhD program. My past experience in leadership and community service mostly involves those I took as an undergrad at Effat University, Saudi Arabia, where I served as an executive member of social relations in student government body, represented the Photonics research group at Effat University, and was elected as the Effat research student representative for year 2018. During my past year at UBCO, I had the opportunity to work alongside great members of the EGSS team. I had the privilege of understanding how the EGSS team works and the EGSS vision to creating a better and more vibrant community for graduate students here at UBCO. The EGSS weekly meetings brought many novel ideas, few of which we were able to execute, while others were pinned for later due to the health regulations. Nevertheless, having seen the positive outcome which the executed virtual activities made on new and continuing graduate students; I sensed the impact EGSS has on grad student life. For this reason, I would like to nominate myself for the role of EGSS President for year 2021-2022 to invest in the potential we collectively have as graduates on-campus.

Vice-President RA&TA (1 Position)

Kasper Petersen

Hello, my name is Kasper! I am a Danish international student at UBCO, research assistant and second-year PhD student in Mechanical Engineering specializing in computational fluid dynamics. The freedom and opportunity in academia to dedicate oneself to learning is what continuously drives me in my work. I have had the privilege of holding three teaching assistantships, that were incredible for my personal and professional development. However, now I want to give back to the community and hopefully inspire you and advocate on your behalf. In other words, I want to help you get your best possible TA/RA experience at UBCO in the role as Vice-President RATA.

Haile Woldesellasse

My name is Haile Woldesellasse, I am a second year PhD student in civil engineering. My diverse research background, and strong academic commitment has equipped me to produce a quality research in my field of study. During my master’s study, I earned a certificate of excellence for outstanding academic performance and maintaining a GPA of 4.0. In addition, this year I worked as a Teaching Assistant (TA) for two classes: Infrastructure Management I and Infrastructure Management II. For these classes, prepared materials for the course, gave lectures and hands on practice in GIS and programming language (RStudio). I have received a positive feedback from the students for going above and beyond in assisting whenever needed. Furthermore, successfully organized a panel discussion on data science and AI with 70+ undergraduate students (in UAE) and aspiring researchers (from North America). The focus of the discussion benefited the students from different background who are entering the workforce or preparing to pursue further study.

As the vice-president of finances, I will strive to help planning fund-raising events, as well as coordinating all financial exchanges needed to maintain and expand the impact of our EGSS. My previous experience will help me to perform this job. During my master’s degree in Brazil, I was able to help my research group to obtain funding and I managed the financial resources in 2019-2020 for the Life Cycle Assessment group. I would be happy to be a part of the EGSS, striving to improve the student's experience at UBC Okanagan.

Sahar Alousi

My name is Sahar Alousi, I joined UBCO for a PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 2019 with a great focus on Bioengineering. It has been a completely new experience for me as a microbiologist exploring the world of engineering. I have completed my undergraduate studies in biology and earned my Masters degree in molecular biology. In the past two years I have gained valuable experience through working closely with electrical, mechanical, and civil engineering students. This vibrant environment at the School of Engineering motivated me to get involved in EGSS activities. While the past year has been a challenging one for many of us, I believe that a promising year is ahead of us. Learning and sharing experiences among graduate students are extremely important. I believe that joining EGSS as a Director at Large would be rewarding not only for me but for all members who are interested in discovering various fields.
