Participating in the search of a new Deputy Vice Chancellor is an opportunity to engage in the UBC Okanagan Campus’ commitment towards equitable, inclusive and fair practices. At this point in my career, my historical knowledge and my hard-earned experiences through tenure and promotion have provided the necessary foundations to understand the complexities and the rewards of working at the Okanagan campus. I adhere strongly to the three major themes, inclusion, collaboration and innovation, of the new strategic plan, Shaping UBC’s Next Century. While our collective accomplishments at UBC O are many, at the heart of these successes is the importance of conceptualizing, creating and developing innovative and evidence-based learning and research opportunities for a diverse pool of domestic and international students. How will our new DVC facilitate initiatives supporting excellence for students, faculty and staff? In terms of Internationalization, what type of parameters will facilitate faculty and student collaborative efforts in a globalized world? Understanding that our campus is located on the unceded traditional and ancestral territory of the Syilx Okanagan People, what will be the commitment to Indigenous engagement? Lastly, what directions will contribute to a better world through the promotion of wellbeing, mental health and sustainability? If I am elected, these foci will be actively inserted into on-going processes and emergent discourses of the search committee. These are some of the issues that I would explore and emphasize as important considerations as the committee searches for next Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the Okanagan campus.
