OPENING KEYNOTE: PROFESSOR MOURA QUAYLE AND Dr. ANGÈLE BEAUSOLEIL "A DESIGN PRIMER FOR STUDENT ADVISOR INNOVATORS"

The World Economic Forum 2016 Future of Jobs report argues that complex problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity and collaborating are the most important skills for the ever evolving knowledge economy. As organizations seek to solve the problems in an increasingly complex and unpredictable world, they will demand innovators who are capable of navigating uncertainty and leaders who can motivate and inspire diverse teams of creative people. UBC students are looking to contribute to change in their lives, and in the communities and organizations where they work and live – both now and in the future. As advisors, how can we design our work with students to help them navigate uncertainty and develop the skills required to thrive. Professor Quayle and Dr. Beausoleil will introduce you to Strategic Design as a collaborative and disciplined thinking process for tackling complex problems, challenges and opportunities. Strategic Design uses a designer’s tool-kit, engages in empathic activities, supports individual and group idea generation, and delivers innovative solutions. Its process may transform advisor's into innovators, as guiding students to think, act and work in innovative ways is critical for personal and leadership development.
