Robert L. Heinkel
I would like to continue to serve as a trustee (and Vice Chair, if the Board chooses) to the UBC Faculty Pension Plan and its members, as I have done for 25 years.
I have a Ph.D. in Finance and my teaching and research involves institutional investing. Besides the Faculty Pension Plan, I oversee a student-run portfolio here in the Sauder School, and I am a member of the Investment Committees of the Clayoquot Biosphere Trust, and the Vancouver Foundation.
I am excited to work with our staff to insure that our members’ needs are met at the lowest cost possible.
The board continues taking a careful approach to the investment of your savings; our external managers are well-known to us and have our trust. Providing our members with sufficient retirement income, with as little risk and cost as possible, is always our first objective.

I have been a faculty member at UBC for over 20 years. In the past have also served as a member of the University of Victoria Board of Governors. I have substantial experience as a member of UBC, experience with and investment in the faculty pension plan, and experience with university governance more generally. I commit to acting in the best interests of the members of the pension plan, and to acting with due diligence. The pension plan should be managed to provide financial benefits to members. Yet, while pension returns need to be competitive relative to market alternatives, as a community of societal leaders we should simultaneously consider sustainability, ethical, and financial considerations. If elected, I would encourage the board to explore additional investment options, beyond the somewhat limited choices that are currently available to faculty plan members.

I have read and understand roles and responsibilities of a trustee for UBC Faculty Pension Plan (FPP). We have significant amount of assets in our FPP fund and it is vital that it is managed professionally and prudently. It is personally important to me that the interests of both our current and retired members are well looked after.
With a team of other trustees and based on my four years of experience as FPP trustee, I am fully committed to help implement the best possible investment strategies to achieve good returns for long term. It is critical because our members depend on the financial returns to sustain themselves throughout their retirement life. Financial problem is the last thing we need in our retirement years.
With my background in finance and extensive experience in Project Management, I am committed to fulfill my obligations as a FPP trustee to optimize our returns.
